The last month or so in pictures [May. 24th, 2010|03:36 pm]
To start: General SoCal pictures from last month including pics with eorlover in them, long exposures and planes taking off from LAX near lifftchi's place.

Supercar Sunday on April 18, 2010 in Woodland Hills, CA. Not a giant gathering (this time), but some fairly unique cars did show up, including a Mercedes Benz SL Gullwing.

Disneyland from April 19-21, where many things were seen, including Captain EO and Space Mountain.

Supercar Sunday on April 25, 2010 was about 4 time larger than the one listed above. Numerous unique and beautiful cars were seen. I ended up focusing on taking pictures of as many exotic car badges and nameplates as I could.

And finally, a random roadtrip with other back to Disneyland on May 22, 2010. The Aladdin Show at the Hyperion Theatre was awesome, as was Disney's Lost and Found folks.

I lost my phone on the Tower of Terror in California Adventure, but didn't realize it until reaching Space Mountain. When the staff found the phone, they searched the phone book for "Mom" and called her. She handed the phone off to Dad, whom I'd called earlier and told him I was with skie. He called my brother for skie's number. Finally, skie texted my work phone to let me know that my phone had been found. In the end, I got the phone back, and had an AWESOME time with all involved.

(I'm going back to Disneyland on Sun-Tue (5/30-6/1), expect more pictures after that!)

Vehicular triumph! [Apr. 3rd, 2010|06:53 pm]
[Current Mood |ecstaticecstatic]

I have a running diesel car again! Unfortunately, it smokes too much still, but at least I can use it to commute and cut that cost in half or more (35-40MPG >>> 18-22MPG).

Turns out the problem was all about air. There was air being sucked into the fuel filter bypass thermo-thinger (not a thermostat, not a thermocouple). When I changed the filter last year, I filled it up, and that seems to be about 1 day's worth of fuel.

Many many thanks to dad for his help, tools and knowledge.

Now, I have to clean it out and put various things back on that were removed for repair.

How to make my weekend suck less [Mar. 10th, 2010|10:19 am]
After a fun night at Rocky on Saturday, I went with funjon, kikikimi and a few others up to the Marin Headlands, north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and a bit west too.

Happily snapping pictures in the area, it all came to a sudden halt: "CF ERROR."

Power cycled the camera (Canon XTi/400D) resulted in the same error. Switching to the backup card allowed picture taking to resume, but putting the card in another camera (funjon's Canon 5DmkII) caused the camera to ask if it should format the card.

Dejected, I continued shooting on the backup card and secondary camera (point and shoot Canon SD950IS), and grumbled at my potential loss. The little point and shoot has a few nifty gimmicks like panoramic assist and time lapse video to keep things interesting.

Once we got home, funjon unleashed some photo recovery software on the bad CF card, and it only made it 558 pictures before stopping progress.

A bit of googling found a random open source product called PhotoRec, short for photo recovery. Unleashing this software on the card netted over 1,000 pictures including the previously-thought-to-be-lost ones. Of the ones taken Sunday, only 2 were corrupt.

Once I get a bit of time, I'll start sharing more of the recovered pictures on Flickr and my own photo gallery.

Dear galatic jackass... [Feb. 17th, 2010|10:17 am]
Perhaps you were unclear on the concept of directional indicators.

hereafter referred to as blinkersCollapse )

* Could have been out of blinker fluid. Refills are next to the buckets of prop-wash.
** I abhor passing on the right, and avoid doing so, if at all possible.

Still keeping up with the photo-a-day even amidst moving and other things (random trip to Disneyland, etc).

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? Are you going to wear coordinating costumes with a friend or partner? Did you buy something pre-fab or make it yourself?

First question listed was submitted by crazyprotein. (Follow-up questions, if any, may have been added by LiveJournal.)

"New" car fun... [Jul. 27th, 2009|02:42 pm]
With the Jetta not starting for over a month after a fuel filter change, I took drastic measures and picked up a second car: a 1991 Lexus LS400 with 238,000 miles.

Rolling in style does have some drawbacks:

  • Jetta: ~40mpg, Lexus: ~18mpg
  • Jetta: ~$2.809/gallon for diesel 14.5 gallon tank, Lexus: $3.059/gallon for 91 octane 22 gallon tank
  • Jetta: 8 valves and no "ignition" system, Lexus: 32 valves, 8 spark plugs, 2 caps/rotors/distributors

But the upsides are nice:

  • Jetta: ~90hp, Lexus ~256hp
  • Jetta: 4 adults in a squeeze, Lexus: 5 adults in comfort

Well you get the idea...

Thankfully parts are easy to find (Amazon has a X-BOX HYUUUUHE selection), and the car's large enough that repairs are simple to do (front pads/rotors took ~2hrs once all the right tools were in hand).

I don't think I'm going to sell the Jetta quite yet, but it's nice to have a car that'll last for at least a few years while I decide what to do with it.
